CONNECTING AN ELECTRICAL CHOKE

"On the choke there are two contacts. The one with the (+) above it gets battery power with the key on(you could run a wire from 'r' terminal of the starter, or there may be an unused ign powered wire under the hood somewhere, esp. the green one). The other terminal (-) should run to ground.

Make sure the choke plate moves freely after you unwire it. If it gets jammed, your car will throw a fit. Once you have it wired up, before you install the air cleaner pump the gas once, and try to start the car cold. The choke should close when you hit the gas. A little cam will drop down against the fast idle screw (on the other side of the carb I think), this screw controls the warm up idle speed and should run 1800-2200RPM cold.

If idle doesn't decrease after 30 seconds, give the gas a little tap, idle should drop to 1000-1500 RPM. By 5 minutes, the choke should be fully open and idle should be normal (possibly requiring a tap to the accelerator to get it to drop down).

Your manual should have exact specs for these adjustments, but the numbers I've given here will give good driveability, and are close enough for you to see if the thing is working. A noxious cloud of rich smoke out the tailpipe means the choke is not open enough."
